Trump Warns Minneapolis Mayor Is ‘Playing With Fire’ After Refusing to Enforce Federal Immigration Laws
Former President Donald Trump accused Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of violating federal law after Frey said the city would not enforce federal immigration laws.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that he was “surprised” by Frey’s statement and warned that the mayor was “playing with fire.” Trump claimed he had recently had a positive conversation with Frey, making the mayor’s public stance even more troubling, according to the former president.

“Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce federal immigration laws,” Frey said earlier, reaffirming the city’s long-standing position as a sanctuary city that limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Trump argued that such a stance could amount to a serious violation of the law and suggested that someone within Frey’s inner circle should explain the legal consequences to him.
The clash comes as immigration enforcement has become a central political issue nationally, with Republican leaders pushing for tougher cooperation with federal authorities and Democratic-led cities increasingly resisting those efforts.
City officials in Minneapolis have previously said their policies are designed to build trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement, and that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government, not city police.
The mayor’s office has not yet issued a response to Trump’s latest remarks.
