Former White House strategist Steve Bannon told a group of Republican staffers this week that the party must work aggressively to secure long-term control of key government institutions or risk criminal consequences if they lose future elections.

According to Politico, Bannon delivered the remarks Wednesday at an event hosted by the Conservative Partnership Academy, an organization that trains conservative congressional staff. Speaking about the 2026 midterms and the 2028 presidential election, Bannon claimed that a Republican loss could result in legal consequences for Trump allies.

“If we lose the midterms and we lose 2028, some in this room are going to prison,” Bannon said, adding that he included himself in that possibility.

Bannon, who previously served time for refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election, argued that Republicans must move quickly to convert former President Donald Trump’s executive actions into permanent law. He said that doing so is necessary to prevent future Democratic administrations from reversing Trump-era policies.

He also referenced recent election results in New York, Virginia, and New Jersey — where Democrats performed strongly — as a sign that Republicans should intensify their political strategy, not scale back.

Bannon urged Republican lawmakers to move past what he described as “structural barriers” in Washington, including procedural limits in the Senate. According to Politico, he has been in discussions with GOP senators about these efforts, including with lawmakers typically seen as institutional conservatives.

The Politico report also notes that Bannon specifically highlighted the recent election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City, calling it a “wake-up call” for the Republican Party. He suggested the Justice Department and other agencies should examine Mamdani’s citizenship — despite Mamdani being a naturalized U.S. citizen who has lived in the country since early childhood.

Critics of Bannon’s comments warn that they reflect an escalation in rhetoric toward consolidating political control and weakening democratic checks and balances. Some political analysts have described the speech as a sign of rising internal pressure within the Republican Party following recent electoral setbacks.

Bannon’s remarks come as Republican officials, donors, and strategists continue to debate how the party should respond to shifting voter priorities and economic concerns ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
