After Losing Tariff Case, Trump Says Court Gave Him “Far More Powers”

Democrats celebrated a trio of special election victories Tuesday night, delivering a quiet but significant boost to their momentum as President Donald Trump addressed the nation during his State of the Union speech.

In Pennsylvania, Democrats protected their razor-thin majority in the state House of Representatives, while in Maine the party successfully defended a key legislative seat. The wins come as both parties closely monitor local races for signs of voter sentiment ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Ana Tiburcio and Jennifer Mazzocco secured victories in Pennsylvania’s 22nd and 42nd districts. Mazzocco dominated her race in Allegheny County, winning by 64 points with 81.7 percent of the vote — a dramatic improvement over her predecessor’s 33-point margin in 2024. Tiburcio captured 67.3 percent of the vote in Lehigh County.

The results preserve Democrats’ narrow 102–98 majority in Pennsylvania’s lower chamber, giving Governor Josh Shapiro continued leverage to advance his legislative priorities.

In Maine, Scott Harriman defeated Republican Janet Beaudoin to keep control of the state’s 94th House district. Harriman, a former Lewiston city councilor, received backing from national Democratic figures, including Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin.

Party strategists are eager to frame the outcomes as evidence of sustained Democratic energy at the grassroots level. The victories follow a series of recent down-ballot wins that Democrats argue signal continued backlash against Trump-era policies.

Key swing regions in both states showed strong Democratic turnout. Suburbs outside Pittsburgh, the Allentown corridor, and working-class neighborhoods in Lewiston all delivered decisive margins — areas that could prove pivotal in November.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Trump used his State of the Union address to highlight Republican priorities on immigration, economic policy, and foreign affairs. But the split-screen political moment underscored a familiar pattern: while the president commanded the spotlight, Democrats were quietly adding seats.

Looking ahead, three additional Pennsylvania House special elections are scheduled for March and May — all in districts previously held by Republicans. Both parties are preparing for what could be an early test of the midterm battlefield.
