Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene delivered a blunt warning to her own party Tuesday, saying the “dam is breaking” inside the GOP as she sharply criticized Donald Trump for what she called tone-deaf and damaging behavior.
Speaking on CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins, Greene condemned Trump’s recent remarks about the murders of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer, saying the president’s response crossed a line.
“I thought that statement was absolutely completely below the office of the president of the United States, classless, and it was just wrong,” Greene said, adding that even many Trump supporters recoiled from the post. “MAGA faithful reacted big time and they called it out.”
Trump had used a Truth Social post to attack Reiner for his left-leaning politics, implying the director bore responsibility for his own death. Greene said the backlash reflects growing discomfort within Republican ranks.
Greene, who plans to retire from Congress in January following a bitter rupture with Trump, argued that internal resistance is no longer isolated. “I think the dam is breaking,” she warned, predicting that more Republicans will publicly break with the president.
She pointed to last week’s rare revolt in the House, when 13 Republicans joined Democrats to overturn Trump’s executive order stripping collective bargaining rights from roughly one million federal workers. Greene noted that several of those same lawmakers attended a White House holiday party hours later.
“That’s pretty bold,” she said, describing it as a sign that GOP lawmakers are increasingly willing to defy Trump while still navigating party optics.
Greene also cited events in Indiana, where Republican state senators rejected Trump’s push to redraw congressional maps to create additional GOP-friendly seats. She framed that resistance as evidence Republicans are already positioning themselves for the 2026 midterms.
According to Greene, two issues in particular threaten Republican prospects: affordability and health care. She criticized Trump for dismissing inflation as a “Democrat hoax,” saying it alienates voters struggling to cover basic costs. “What I would like to see from the president is empathy for Americans,” she said, arguing Trump’s billionaire status makes his rhetoric especially harmful.
Greene urged Trump to refocus on domestic concerns and campaign promises, warning that his current approach is costing the party support. “I think the midterms are going to be very hard for Republicans,” she said. “I don’t see Republicans winning the midterms right now.”
