California Gov. Gavin Newsom celebrated the passage of Proposition 50 on Tuesday night, calling it a major step toward pushing back against Republican-led gerrymandering. But he also issued a stark warning that former President Donald Trump is actively preparing to influence next year’s midterm elections.
Proposition 50, championed by Newsom, aims to counter partisan redistricting in Republican-dominated states by adjusting how congressional districts are drawn in California. The measure passed by a wide margin, a result Newsom described as a victory “for the United States of America and the principles our Founding Fathers lived and died for.”
Speaking at an election night rally, Newsom said the result represented a message to Trump and his allies.
“We’re proud of the work the people of California did tonight to send a powerful message to a historic president,” Newsom said. “Donald Trump is the most historically unpopular president in modern history. He promised to make us healthier and wealthier. Instead, we are sicker and poorer. He knows this — that’s why he is already working to rig the midterm elections before one vote is cast.”
Newsom pointed to reports that Trump has privately pressured Republican officials, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, in discussions over congressional seat allocations. He linked those efforts to nationwide Republican redistricting strategies that Democrats argue are designed to maintain minority political control.
“We stood tall in response to Donald Trump’s recklessness,” Newsom said. “But none of us are naive. This is part of a pattern. Donald Trump’s efforts to interfere in the 2026 midterms continue to this day.”
The governor also criticized Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and federal immigration officers in certain cities, including Los Angeles, calling it an attempt to intimidate voters and suppress political participation.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump claimed without evidence that the California election was “rigged,” calling Proposition 50 a “giant scam” in a Truth Social post.
Newsom said those statements were part of a familiar strategy.
“It’s the same playbook we saw after January 6,” he said. “He tried to light democracy on fire once. He is attempting to do it again.”
He closed his remarks by urging Democratic governors and lawmakers in other states to take similar steps to prepare for 2026.
“Let me make this crystal clear,” Newsom said. “We can effectively end Donald Trump’s presidency as we know it — but only if we confront this moment head-on.”
