Washington, D.C. — In a press conference today, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) addressed questions about the stark contrast between former President Donald Trump’s lavish “Great Gatsby”-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago and the partial funding of November’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which remain delayed due to a month-long government shutdown.
The Halloween event, held on October 31, featured high-profile guests dressed in 1920s attire — a scene of opulence that quickly drew criticism as millions of Americans faced uncertainty about their food assistance. Johnson brushed off the backlash, calling the Mar-a-Lago celebration an “annual obligatory tradition” and dismissing the premise of reporters’ questions.
“That’s what he went back to — his obligatory tradition. I discount what you’re trying to do there,” Johnson said, according to a C-SPAN clip shared by journalist Aaron Rupar.
The Trump administration recently announced it would fund only 50% of November’s SNAP benefits, using $4.65 billion from an Agriculture Department contingency fund to cover half of the $9.3 billion typically required for the program. The move affects roughly 42 million Americans who depend on SNAP to meet basic nutritional needs. Officials also warned that distributing even the partial benefits could take weeks, worsening the strain on low-income families already struggling through the shutdown.
Critics on social media compared the extravagance of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago event to the excesses portrayed in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, a novel that explores wealth, moral decay, and class disparity. The timing of the party — mere hours before SNAP funding lapsed — ignited accusations of elitism and insensitivity from political opponents and anti-hunger advocates alike.
Johnson’s remarks triggered widespread backlash online. “While millions struggle to put food on the table, the president is partying at Mar-a-Lago. That’s disgusting,” one user commented on Rupar’s post, which has since gone viral.
The decision to provide only partial funding for SNAP follows a legal battle in which the Trump administration declined to appeal a federal court ruling mandating the program’s restoration during the shutdown. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the administration would comply with the order but warned that delays in processing payments were likely.
Now entering its 39th day, the shutdown continues to highlight the widening gap between political spectacle and public need — leaving many to question whether the administration’s priorities truly align with the struggles of everyday Americans.
