Just hours before his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to restart nuclear weapons testing.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump shocked the international community on Wednesday by announcing that he has directed the Defense Department to immediately begin testing nuclear weapons for the first time in more than three decades.

“Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, just before his highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. “That process will begin immediately.”

The United States has not conducted a nuclear test since 1992, though the capability still exists at the Nevada National Security Site. Trump’s announcement marks a major break from a long-standing U.S. policy of restraint on nuclear testing.

During his first term, Trump sought a tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal, according to reports from NBC News, a move that critics said could destabilize global security.

The timing of Trump’s statement is notable. Earlier in the day, Russia announced it had tested a new long-range nuclear-powered underwater weapon and recently carried out another test of a nuclear-capable missile.

Trump said his decision was based on keeping pace with rivals. “Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within five years,” he posted.

When asked by reporters whether he planned to formally change U.S. nuclear testing policy, Trump declined to comment.

The announcement comes as Trump continues his Asia trip, where he has emphasized that showing American economic and military strength is the best way to maintain peace.

This new nuclear testing order reflects that philosophy, signaling Trump’s willingness to confront adversaries directly while showcasing U.S. military capability.

The decision has raised global concerns about a potential new nuclear arms race, the future of arms control agreements, and renewed instability in international security.

If carried out, the move would represent the first U.S. nuclear test in over 30 years, marking a turning point in global nuclear policy.
