Russia Extends Prison Sentence For U.S. Citizen Robert Gilman After New Assault Charges -The Newz Square
A court in the Russian city of Voronezh on Wednesday sentenced U.S. citizen Robert Gilman to an additional two years in prison, according to the RIA news agency.
Gilman, a former U.S. Marine, has been incarcerated in Russia since 2022. His original conviction stemmed from a drunken assault on a prison officer.
Russian authorities said his sentence was extended after he was found guilty of further assaults committed while already behind bars.
These later convictions involve attacks on multiple prison officials, according to court documents cited by state media.
Officials said Gilman also assaulted a state investigator who had been assigned to examine his prior behavior in custody.
The latest charges brought against him relate to what prosecutors describe as another assault on prison staff during his incarceration.
Gilman’s legal troubles have continued to grow throughout his time in the Russian penal system, despite appeals made by his representatives.
Before his arrest, Gilman had transitioned into a career as an English teacher following his service in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is now one of at least nine Americans who remain imprisoned in Russia after U.S.-Russia prisoner exchanges conducted in 2024 and earlier this year.
