Trump Claims Supreme Court Tariff Ruling Would Be ‘Biggest’ National Security Threat

President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that a potential Supreme Court ruling limiting his authority to impose tariffs would amount to the “biggest threat in history” to U.S. national security, arguing the country would be left “financially defenseless” if the justices rule against him.
The Supreme Court has been reviewing the legality of Trump’s sweeping tariff program since Nov. 5, though it has not yet announced when a decision will be issued. Several corporations and Democratic-led states have also challenged the tariffs in the U.S. Court of International Trade, arguing that only Congress—not the president—has constitutional power to levy them.
In a post on social media, Trump warned that a ruling curbing his authority would be catastrophic.
“The biggest threat in history to U.S. National Security would be a negative decision on tariffs by the U.S. Supreme Court,” he wrote, insisting the nation would be left “financially defenseless.”
Trump added that the United States should be able to adopt tariff measures “others already do,” sharing a photo of French President Emmanuel Macron, who recently warned China that Europe may impose tariffs if Beijing does not address its trade surplus.
The president credited his tariff policies with strengthening the country’s geopolitical position. “Because of tariffs, easily and quickly applied, our national security has been greatly enhanced, and we have become the financially strongest country, by far, anywhere in the world,” he said. “Only dark and sinister forces would want to see that end.”
The warning comes as Trump’s approval ratings have slid to their lowest point since returning to office in January, driven largely by voter frustration over the high cost of living—pressures many Americans blame, at least in part, on tariffs. U.S. inflation rose to 2.8% year-over-year in September.
The tariff fight has also contributed to fractures inside the MAGA movement. Former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene accused Trump last month of failing to focus on affordability issues, a criticism that helped precipitate a public break between the two.
Meanwhile, major U.S. companies are increasingly pushing back. Costco last week became the most prominent corporation to sue the administration, arguing Trump’s tariffs are unlawful. The duties remain a central pillar of Trump’s economic and foreign-policy strategy aimed at addressing what he calls chronic trade imbalances and pressuring foreign governments.
The suit contends the president exceeded his authority and that tariffs imposed without congressional approval cannot stand.
