Trump Doubles Down: “I Don’t Have to Go Back to Congress” on Tariffs

President Donald Trump said Monday that he does not need congressional approval to impose tariffs, arguing that existing laws already grant him that authority.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “As President, I do not have to go back to Congress to get approval of Tariffs. It has already been gotten, in many forms, a long time ago.”
He also claimed that the Supreme Court’s recent decision striking down his use of emergency powers to impose tariffs had effectively reaffirmed his authority.
“They were also just reaffirmed by the ridiculous and poorly crafted supreme court decision!” Trump wrote, signing the message “President DJT.”
The comments come days after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6-3 that Trump exceeded his authority by imposing sweeping tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a 1977 law that grants presidents certain emergency powers.
The Court concluded that the statute does not explicitly authorize the imposition of tariffs and said such taxation powers require clear approval from Congress.
Despite the ruling, Trump has maintained that other legal authorities allow him to continue imposing tariffs. He recently announced a new blanket tariff on imports, signaling he plans to pursue alternative legal pathways.
The White House has not indicated whether it will seek congressional action, setting up a potential new legal and political battle over the limits of presidential trade powers.
