President Donald Trump ignited fresh controversy after suggesting that television networks with overwhelmingly negative coverage of him and Republicans should lose their broadcast licenses.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump argued that major network newscasts and late-night shows are “almost 100% Negative” toward him, the MAGA movement, and the Republican Party, and questioned whether that bias should result in government action.

“If Network NEWSCASTS, and their Late Night Shows, are almost 100% Negative to President Donald J. Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party, shouldn’t their very valuable Broadcast Licenses be terminated?” Trump wrote. “I say, YES!”

The post immediately raised concerns among media watchdogs and First Amendment advocates, who warned that revoking broadcast licenses over political criticism would amount to government retaliation against free speech.

Under U.S. law, broadcast licenses are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, which is prohibited from censoring content based on viewpoint. Legal experts have long held that negative or critical coverage of elected officials is protected speech.

Trump has frequently accused mainstream media outlets of spreading “fake news” and acting as political adversaries, but his latest remarks go further by openly calling for punitive action against networks he believes are hostile to his presidency.

The former and current president has also clashed repeatedly with late-night hosts, cable news anchors, and major newspapers, often singling them out by name in social media posts and speeches.

Critics say the remarks echo authoritarian tactics, where governments use licensing and regulatory power to intimidate or silence independent media. Supporters, however, argue Trump is voicing frustration shared by many conservatives who believe the media landscape is unfairly tilted against them.

The White House and the FCC have not commented on Trump’s post, and there is no indication that any formal action is being considered.

Still, the statement adds to growing concerns about press freedom and political pressure on media institutions as Trump continues to blur the line between criticism of coverage and threats of government retaliation.
