Trump Says the Quiet Part Out Loud: “End the Filibuster So Democrats Never Win Again”

Donald Trump is openly urging Republicans to help him lock Democrats out of power for good, according to remarks he made during a private breakfast meeting with GOP senators this week.
Trump told lawmakers that if Republicans eliminate the Senate filibuster — the rule that allows the minority party to block legislation — the GOP could pass its entire legislative wishlist and permanently tip the balance of political power.
“If we do what I’m saying, they’ll never — they’ll most likely never — attain power,” Trump said, suggesting that ending the filibuster would all but guarantee long-term Republican control. “Because we will have passed every single thing that you can imagine.”
The filibuster is one of the few remaining tools Democrats can use to stop or slow Republican bills in the Senate. Without it, whichever party holds a simple majority can enact sweeping policy changes with no input from the minority.
Trump made it clear that his goal isn’t just short-term wins. He implied the move would structurally reshape government in Republicans’ favor.
“We have to get the word out,” he said. “If we don’t, we’re making a very big mistake.”
His comments come as he continues to refuse to rule out running for a third presidential term — something the Constitution explicitly prohibits. The 22nd Amendment states that no person can be elected president more than twice. Trump has already served two terms, but when asked last month whether he would run again anyway, he replied, “I would love to do it.”
Critics say Trump’s remarks reveal a broader plan: dismantling democratic guardrails and consolidating power in a way that would make alternating leadership — a defining feature of American politics — far less likely.
Republican senators appear divided. Some have brushed off Trump’s suggestion, while others have indicated they could consider ending the filibuster if they regain a larger Senate majority.
But the message from Trump was unmistakable. He’s no longer hinting at it. He’s saying it out loud — he wants a system in which Republicans rule indefinitely.
