President Donald Trump on Election Day morning urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, claiming that failure to do so would doom the GOP in upcoming elections and stall his policy agenda amid a deepening government shutdown.

In a fiery Truth Social post, Trump argued that Democrats would dominate future contests if Republicans kept the 60-vote threshold in place.

“The Democrats are far more likely to win the Midterms, and the next Presidential Election, if we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster (The Nuclear Option!), because it will be impossible for Republicans to get Common Sense Policies done with these Crazed Democrat Lunatics being able to block everything,” Trump wrote.

He warned that gridlock would paralyze Washington.

“For three years, nothing will be passed, and Republicans will be blamed,” he continued. “If we do terminate the Filibuster, we will get EVERYTHING approved, like no Congress in history.”

The posts landed as voters headed to the polls in Virginia and New Jersey for contentious gubernatorial elections and as the federal government shutdown entered its 35th day, the longest in U.S. history. A recent ABC News poll found more Americans blaming Republicans than Democrats for the ongoing stalemate.

The Senate’s filibuster rule requires 60 votes to move most legislation forward, a hurdle that has frustrated both parties in recent years. Though some lawmakers have discussed eliminating it, Senate Majority Leader John Thune brushed off Trump’s renewed push on Monday, saying, “The votes aren’t there.”

So far, Trump’s return to the White House has yielded just one major legislative win, a sweeping tax cut and energy deregulation package passed through a budget process that bypassed the filibuster. The president has since leaned heavily on executive actions while teasing priorities such as election reforms, new tax cuts, and stricter border measures, all of which he insists could advance only if Republicans pull the trigger on ending the filibuster.
