Somali American Salman Fiqy told CNN on Saturday that he has withdrawn his support for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party after hearing the president refer to Somalis as “garbage.”
Fiqy, who once campaigned for Trump in Minnesota, said the remarks crossed a line and revealed a level of disrespect he could no longer overlook. He joined Victor Blackwell on CNN’s First of All to explain his decision and publicly denounce the president’s rhetoric.
Calling the comments “racist” and “dehumanizing,” Fiqy said he was stunned that such language came from the commander in chief of the United States. “It was very dehumanizing and it’s very unpresidential… to dehumanize an entire community by calling them garbage,” he said.
Trump’s remarks came during a televised Cabinet meeting this week, where he declared, “They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country… Their country is no good for a reason.” His comments were made in reference to Somalis living in the U.S., particularly in Minnesota.
The president’s language followed a New York Times report alleging that some members of Minnesota’s Somali community participated in a fraud scheme that cost taxpayers more than $1 billion. Critics have accused Trump of using the scandal to attack the entire community.
Fiqy said the remarks left him deeply disappointed, not only in Trump but also in the Republican Party and Minnesota GOP leaders, who he says failed to defend Somali Americans after the president’s statements.
He explained that his break with Trump was not sudden but the result of years of frustration. Since Trump took office, Fiqy said he has watched the president repeatedly fall short of the promises he made to voters and fail to govern with dignity.
“The reason why this decision came about is because it was long simmering,” Fiqy said. “I was monitoring his performance… he seems not to be delivering on the promises he made. And the last thing that broke the camel’s back was when he called the Somali community garbage.”
Fiqy’s announcement adds to growing backlash from Somali Americans nationwide, many of whom say Trump’s comments have put their community at risk and deepened feelings of alienation. His withdrawal of support reflects broader concerns about the president’s rhetoric and its impact on immigrant communities.
