“He Just Made It Up”: Trump’s Lead Immigration Commander Accused of Perjury in Tear Gas Case

A top Trump immigration official is facing serious allegations after a newly filed court motion accused the Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino of fabricating a story to justify firing tear gas into a crowd of protesters — and then lying about it under oath.
Plaintiffs say the government claimed Bovino deployed tear gas only after being struck in the head with a rock during a confrontation in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. But attorneys who reviewed all released security and body-camera footage say there is no evidence that Bovino was hit by anything before launching the gas.
The motion states: “Defendant Bovino has lied under oath about this issue. This court should doubt defendants’ credibility as a result.”
The controversy escalated after DHS allegedly failed to hand over unedited drone footage that a federal judge ordered released — while the agency distributed selectively edited clips online to defend Bovino’s actions.
U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis is overseeing the case as part of a broader federal crackdown known as Operation Midway Blitz. Ellis initially required Bovino to check in with the court daily and produce full body-camera and drone footage. The daily check-ins were paused on appeal, but the order to provide complete video evidence remains in effect.
Bovino has stood by his conduct, insisting agents used “the least amount of force necessary.” He also indicated he would have deployed more tear gas had it been available.
Meanwhile, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin is facing growing scrutiny for statements that critics say don’t match footage or police reports. On Tuesday, she posted on X claiming a woman “rammed” an agent’s vehicle and “violently” attacked officers during a separate Illinois arrest.

The court is now being asked to formally evaluate whether DHS officials provided false testimony. The ruling could directly affect how federal agents are allowed to use force at protests — not only in Chicago, but nationwide.
