President Donald Trump on Monday announced a sweeping new policy on artificial intelligence, signaling that his administration will move to impose a single national rulebook for AI development — a shift that has already alarmed some of his most loyal MAGA allies.

“There must be only one rulebook if we are going to continue to lead in AI,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We are beating all countries at this point in the race, but that won’t last long if we are going to have 50 states — many of them bad actors — involved in rules and the approval process.”

The president warned that fragmented oversight would “destroy AI in its infancy” and said he plans to issue a “One Rule” executive order this week.

“You can’t expect a company to get 50 approvals every time they want to do something,” he wrote. “That will never work!”

Trump has aggressively pushed AI investment during his second term, elevating several Silicon Valley tech leaders into top administration roles and carving out tariff exemptions for AI-heavy industries.

But the pivot has drawn criticism from inside the MAGA movement. Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist, has publicly cautioned that the “tech bros” empowering Trump on AI are unreliable and will “jump ship” the moment Republicans lose Congress.

Meanwhile, states have begun rolling out their own AI regulations to address rising concerns about algorithmic discrimination, data privacy, and consumer protection.

Colorado and California have enacted broad new AI statutes, while New York has proposed sweeping rules of its own.

Industry leaders have complained that this patchwork of state-level laws is unworkable and will create conflicting regulatory burdens for developers — an argument Trump echoed in his post.

The president has already moved to slash barriers for AI development. In his first week back in office, Trump signed an executive order eliminating significant federal regulatory hurdles for AI companies.
