Nebraska Mom Says Secret Service Showed Up at Her Door Over Tweet Under Trump Administration

A Nebraska mother says she was questioned by the U.S. Secret Service after posting a tweet that contained no threats or calls for violence, raising fresh concerns about free speech and government overreach.
Jamie Bonkiewicz shared a video and photos on X showing Secret Service agents and a local police officer at her front door, saying they came to question her about comments she made online.
“The Secret Service came to my door today because of a tweet,” Bonkiewicz wrote. “No threats. No violence. Just words. That’s where we are now.”
In the footage, an agent asks Bonkiewicz about her online statements, including a remark in which she said she wanted to see “their trials.” Bonkiewicz clarified that she was referring to accountability for public officials, likening it to Nuremberg-style tribunals for those who enable unlawful actions—not violence.
Agents also asked whether she attends protests, travels to political rallies, or keeps weapons in her home. Bonkiewicz declined to answer some of the questions, repeatedly asking why the information was relevant.
“For certain questionnaires, we have to ask,” one agent replied.
At one point, Bonkiewicz’s husband asked what constitutes crossing the line on social media. The agent described her post as potentially a “veiled threat,” but then acknowledged that after hearing her explanation, it appeared to be a “non-issue.”
“Now that I know you didn’t mean anything by it, it’s basically a non-issue,” the agent said.
Bonkiewicz later posted images of the encounter to counter skepticism online, writing, “For anyone doubting me. Here they are.”
The Secret Service has not publicly commented on the visit. The agency is tasked with investigating potential threats against public officials, though civil liberties advocates have long warned that overly broad interpretations of online speech can chill lawful political expression.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of how federal law enforcement monitors and responds to political speech on social media.
