Another journalist has been arrested amid ongoing law enforcement actions tied to protest coverage, raising fresh concerns about press freedom. According to local and national news reports, Georgia Fort, a host on WCCO Radio, was taken into custody after weeks of reporting on protests and arrests in Minneapolis.

Fort is the latest media figure detained while covering unrest connected to immigration enforcement and protest activity. On Thursday night, Don Lemon was also arrested in Los Angeles while reporting on events surrounding the Grammy Awards, according to multiple outlets.

KARE 11 reported that Minneapolis civil rights attorney and racial justice advocate Nekima Levy Armstrong was also arrested in connection with the same wave of enforcement actions. All three individuals taken into custody are Black.

According to Fort, federal agents arrived at her home at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time. She said agents identified themselves as members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and told her they had obtained a grand jury warrant for her arrest.

“Agents are at my door right now. They’re saying they were able to go before a grand jury and they have a warrant for my arrest,” Fort said in a video posted shortly before she was taken into custody.

In the video, Fort said she believes the arrest is directly tied to her work as a journalist. She explained that she had filmed a church protest several weeks earlier as part of her reporting on demonstrations in Minneapolis.

“As a member of the press, I filmed the church protest a few weeks ago and now I’m being arrested for that,” Fort said. “It’s hard to understand how we have a Constitution, Constitutional rights, when we can just be arrested for being a member of the press.”

Press freedom advocates and civil rights groups have raised alarms in recent weeks over the growing number of journalists and legal observers being detained while covering protests. Critics argue that the arrests risk chilling newsgathering at a time of heightened public interest and unrest.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific charges against Fort, Lemon, or Armstrong. No immediate comment was available from federal officials regarding the scope of the grand jury proceedings referenced by Fort.

The arrests come as scrutiny intensifies over law enforcement responses to protests nationwide, with journalists warning that criminalizing coverage of public demonstrations threatens core First Amendment protections.
