President Donald Trump claimed in a late-night Truth Social post that he is enjoying the “highest” poll numbers of his political career — a statement that clashes sharply with a wave of recent surveys showing his approval ratings slipping underwater across key issues.

Without citing any source, Trump wrote that his numbers are the highest he has “ever received,” adding, “Obviously, people like a strong and powerful Country, with the best economy, EVER!” The post came as multiple national polls released over the past week suggest growing public dissatisfaction with his second term.

A survey from Fox News released Jan. 28 found that just 44 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, while 56 percent disapprove. The poll of 1,005 registered voters showed particularly weak ratings on issues often seen as Trump’s strengths, including immigration (45 percent approval), the economy (40 percent), and inflation (35 percent). A majority of respondents — 54 percent — said the country is worse off than it was a year ago.

“The president faces two difficult obstacles — the virtually unanimous and intractable opposition of Democrats and the stubbornness of high prices,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts the Fox News surveys alongside Democratic pollster Chris Anderson. Shaw added that Republicans are hoping economic legislation passed earlier this year will begin to show benefits before the midterm elections.

Other recent polling tells a similar story. An I&I/TIPP survey released Monday put Trump’s approval at 41 percent. A separate poll from Echelon Insights conducted Jan. 22–26 also showed Trump at 41 percent approval.

Polling analyst Nate Silver, who tracks aggregated approval data on his Silver Bulletin Substack, currently places Trump’s average approval rating at 41.5 percent — a steep drop from the roughly 52 percent he held when he returned to office last January. Of the last 10 polls included in Silver’s tracker, none showed Trump above 50 percent approval.

One of the lowest marks came from the Pew Research Center, which found Trump with a net approval rating of minus 24 points: 37 percent approval and 61 percent disapproval.

Less than an hour after boasting about his “highest” poll numbers, Trump shared results from a Newsmax poll. Even that survey, released Jan. 31, showed Trump at just 50 percent approval — unchanged from the previous month.

The disconnect between Trump’s claims and the data arrives as Republicans prepare for a challenging 2026 midterm landscape. With a razor-thin House majority and the Senate also in play, declining approval ratings could complicate GOP efforts to retain control of Congress.
