Sports Journalist Wes Rucker Dies in Five-Car Crash, Leaving Behind Pregnant Wife and Young Son

A well-known Tennessee sports journalist has died following a multi-vehicle crash in Knoxville, leaving behind his pregnant wife and young son.
Wes Rucker, 43, was killed in a five-car accident on Interstate 40 West around 4:50 p.m. on Feb. 19, according to the Police Department. Authorities confirmed one fatality in the crash. Rucker’s death was later confirmed by WBIR, the local news outlet where he covered University of Tennessee athletics.
Police said the crash began when a vehicle stopped for traffic and was rear-ended by another car, causing minor damage. A third vehicle then struck the second car, triggering a chain reaction.
Moments later, a large pickup truck ran into and on top of one of the involved vehicles, fatally injuring the adult male driver. An investigation into the crash remains in its early stages.
WBIR described Rucker as “a longtime and deeply familiar voice in Tennessee Athletics coverage.” He spent years reporting on University of Tennessee sports and became a respected figure in the local sports community.
In addition to his coverage of Tennessee athletics, Rucker was a passionate fan of the Chicago Cubs, Arsenal Football Club, and both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Soccer Teams.
He is survived by his wife, Lauren, their young son Hank, and a baby girl the couple was expecting this spring. In a statement shared by WBIR, Lauren described him as “an extraordinary husband, father, son, brother and friend.”
WBIR News Director Corey Presley said Rucker brought “undeniable energy” to the newsroom and left a lasting impact on colleagues, athletes and the community. “While Wes’ death is a tremendous loss for our colleagues and community, it is most difficult for his wife and young family,” Presley said.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Rucker’s family has raised more than $180,000 toward a $350,000 goal. Organizers said Rucker did not have a life insurance policy, and the funds will go toward supporting Lauren and their children during this difficult time.
