Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says the economic struggle many people feel is real but it shouldn’t be blamed on individuals.

In a May 7 appearance on comedian Ilana Glazer’s It’s Open podcast, the New York Democrat argued that extreme wealth particularly billion-dollar fortunes is less about personal achievement and more about systemic imbalance.

“You can’t earn a billion dollars,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “You just can’t earn that. You can gain market power, bend rules, exploit loopholes, underpay workers but you can’t truly earn that level of wealth.”

Her point: at a certain scale, wealth accumulation stops reflecting merit and starts reflecting structural advantages. To justify it, she suggested, a narrative gets created that frames such wealth as deserved.

“And so, if it’s not actually earned, there has to be a story that it was,” she added.

Her comments come as wealth inequality in the U.S. continues to widen. By the third quarter of 2025, the top 1% held 31.7% of the nation’s wealth the highest level recorded since 1989, according to Federal Reserve data reported by Forbes.

Ocasio-Cortez argued that this imbalance shapes how people see themselves and others. Many, she said, internalize financial hardship as a personal failing rather than recognizing broader economic forces at play.

“We’ve built a kind of moral narrative around wealth,” she said. “People at the top are seen as smarter or more capable, while those struggling are labeled as lazy or less deserving.”

As for her own future, speculation continues ahead of 2026 about whether she might pursue higher office. When asked by strategist David Axelrod about a possible presidential or Senate run, Ocasio-Cortez sidestepped the question, saying her only real ambition is “to change this country.”
