The Kentucky Secretary of State’s office fielded an unusual wave of complaints Tuesday from frustrated voters who couldn’t find open polling stations — only to discover there were no elections happening in their state.

Secretary of State Michael Adams released a statement and posted on X (formerly Twitter) clarifying that Kentucky residents were not being disenfranchised — they were simply mistaken.

“We’re getting calls about polls being closed,” Adams said. “They are closed because we do not have elections today. Kentucky votes next year. You cannot vote today in Kentucky for the mayor of New York City or the governor of Virginia. Sorry.”

The confusion appeared to stem from heavy national coverage of several high-profile East Coast elections that drew national attention — particularly in Virginia, New York, and New Jersey.

In Virginia, Democratic nominee Abigail Spanberger faced off against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in a closely watched gubernatorial race that polling suggests Spanberger is favored to win.

Meanwhile in New York City, voters were deciding between Democrat Zohran Mamdani, 34, Republican Curtis Sliwa, 71, and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, 67, who is running as an Independent. In New Jersey, the gubernatorial race between Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D) and Jack Ciattarelli (R) also drew intense national interest.

The races even caught the attention of former President Donald Trump, who weighed in on Truth Social with one of his signature tirades. “Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self-professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” Trump wrote.

Trump, who carried Kentucky handily in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections, also made waves this week by endorsing Andrew Cuomo, a former Democrat, while threatening to withhold federal funding from New York City if Mamdani — a Democratic Socialist — wins.

“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds… to my beloved first home,” Trump wrote. “This once-great city has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!”

The nonstop national media coverage of these races — from Fox News to CNN — appears to have left some Kentuckians confused about whether they could vote. Adams took the opportunity to remind residents that Kentucky’s state constitution intentionally skips elections once every four years.

“In 1992, Kentuckians voted to amend our constitution to give themselves and election officials a year off from elections once every four years,” Adams told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

That means no state elections take place in Kentucky during odd-numbered years like 2025.

Even outside Kentucky, political reactions to the New York race were extreme. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott joked on X that he would “impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC” if Mamdani wins — a post that quickly went viral.

With Election Night frenzy sweeping the nation, Adams’ reminder may be the most grounded message of the day: Kentuckians will have to wait until next year to vote — and definitely can’t pick the mayor of New York City.
