Pro-Trump Vermont Farmers Hit by Labor Crisis: “We’re Out Here Milking Cows at 4 A.M. Alone”

President Donald Trump
Dairy farmers in Vermont who once proudly supported President Donald Trump are now facing an unexpected crisis: there may soon be no one left to milk their cows. As the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on undocumented immigrants, the state’s dairy industry heavily dependent on immigrant labor is feeling the consequences firsthand, The Boston Globe reported.
For years, Vermont’s dairy farms have relied on immigrant workers to keep operations running around the clock. But with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents now detaining and deporting workers, farmers who once cheered Trump’s tough stance on immigration are having second thoughts.
“All the dairy farmers who voted for Trump were under the impression they weren’t going to come on farms and take our guys,” one farmer told the Globe. “It’s happening more than we’d like. It’s scaring the farming community, and we’re like, ‘This wasn’t supposed to happen.’”
The anxiety deepened last month when Border Patrol agents detained eight Mexican men working at Pleasant Valley Farms, Vermont’s largest dairy operation. Four of those men have already been deported. The arrests sent shockwaves through the farming community, where nearly all labor comes from undocumented workers who often live on-site and handle the most grueling tasks.
Federal officials insist they are not targeting Vermont’s $3.6 billion dairy industry, which supplies about 63 percent of New England’s milk. But local farmers aren’t convinced. Many now worry their businesses could collapse without immigrant labor.
“I think our farmers are concerned about the well-being of their workers. That’s foremost,” said Vermont’s Secretary of Agriculture. “They’re also concerned if the workforce was to go away, who’s going to do the work? Who’s going to milk the cows at 4 a.m.?”
