The First English Settlement In India To Be Fortified Was – It was about the year 1640’s the early year that is known as the commercial expansion, the east India Company constructed one of the known Citadel called as the Fort St George in Madras.

It was the first trading settlement in India To be fortified.

It was around when there was an attempt trying to made to make and protect the English Trade and it was then in the year 1639 that Francis Day and Andrew Cogan who were the representative of the East India Company, purchased the strip of land.

The land was for the construction of  St George, the Patron saints of England.

On February 20th  Cogan along with a few workers and ship arrived at the site so that the work can be started and will be able to finish up the Fort St George.

Completion Of Fort

The full and final completion of the fort took place on April 23, 1664, and the total cost was around £3,000.

The fort serves to be the power for the British rule and also for the location of several battles and historical events.

For many decades the fort faced many challenges and attack that has been made from the French and from Hyder Ali who was the sultan of Mysore.

Due to many attacks and fights that have taken place, there were several areas of the for that got damaged and there in the forgot repaired in 1783 and has been the modified part till now.

The fort was meant to support the small trade post and also it has been into the same it later divided into the bustling city and was divided into white, black town.

The town contains the staying part of different people like in White town where only English and European stays whereas in Black Town the workers and local stayed.

Within the 20 feet of the structure, the British build an ionic structure named  Wellesley house, St. Mary Church, high flagstaff, and a fort museum.

Although as for now the fort is dominated by the politics of Tamil Nadu and the glory of the fort can be still witnessed with some of the artifacts.

This particular fort holds a lot many stories and people to be named behind him and hence is still considered as the home to a garrison that served as a source of British Power.

India holds one of the rich and finest incredible history, there are a lot many places and artifacts that are present to be seen.

They are part of the history and preserved while there was the rule of Britisher.

There were many Mughals, Maurya’s and cholas and so on.

But it was when there was a time of from the British East India Company from the year 1757 and the British raj was initially formed and that was one of the impactful times in the history of India.
